Splash! wins second level of Canine Runway

Splash! was one of 4 Finalists chosen yesterday to compete in the final Third Round of Canine Runway yesterday.  I really couldnt believe my eyes when we were told we were to perform in front of a line of 8 aussies! (4 of them looked a lot like Splash!) so my hopes of getting through to the next round seemed suddenly dependent on her tricks.  Luckily Splash! was happy to give it her best. The MC was one of the guys from Greatest American Dog, Michael with his dog Ezzie.  Check out the youtube video.

Happy Anniversary to The Inquisitive Canine Studio!

Today was a day of celebration! Yep, it was one year ago that this dog trainer opened The Inquisitive Canine studio here in Ventura. Where does the time go? Ill tell you... it goes to teaching all the wonderful doggies and their families in my dog training classes, workshops, and socials...and in privates as well.

My friend Nancy and her dog Kona really made my day - they brought some yummy candies all customized just for todays event! Each one tied with a personal label for those to take with them... very rewarding and generous I must say... A BIG shout out and thank you! (click-treat for you both)... We had a fun raffle - everyone won something... which made me feel like a big winner too!

The Natural Balance company was generous and donated all of the goodie-bags for people to take home...they also supplied the big daddy of all the raffle prizes... You can see the picture of Sofia - the big winner - Her dogs Rocky and Mick will love the items too... Premier Pet Products was also kind enough to donate items for the raffle - which everyone loved! Thanks to both companies for your generosity!

We all had lots of fun today at our Anniversary party...lots of great friends showing up with their dogs, and some just wanting to share in the festivities, showing their support. I appreciate each and every one who came out to share their good wishes. Id also like to give an extra shout out big thank you and I love you to my wonderful husband and own dog Poncho - for all the love and support, and for believing in me.

Splash! wins Canine Runway in Las Vegas!

Splash! won Canine Runway- "The search for Americas most paw-pular pooch" in Las Vegas on Sept 9th.  She was on the Las Vegas news the day before.  And was supposed to be on the news again on the 10th but there was a mix up.  Instead there was a segment on pet products, so Kiko ended up being on the news advertising a doggie car seat :)

The winnings: The cover of Dog Fancy, her face on Bamboo pet products, A years supply of Natural Balance, a year supply of NuHemp treats, 3 nights stay in Sedona Arizona at a dog friendly hotel, and a gift basket.

We drove up from San Diego on the 15.

Kiko and Splash! loved staying in the lush hotel!

Kiko got to see one of her favorite people in the world. Alex, a guy that works at South Bark Dog Wash.

Splash! enjoyed the car rides through the strip.

Canine Selective Hearing

I think I can confidently suggest you have probably experienced so-called "selective hearing" from your dog, but how you interpret what underpins your pets occasional "brain fogs" probably serves to either strengthen or undermine your dog training efforts. There are a lot of opinions regarding dogs and their compliance--or lack thereof--and an amazing array of methods intended to inspire canine performance motivation.

Could this dog--your dog, the one who responds like a slavering Pavlov-subject, ready to leap through flaming hoops, or at least sit at the speed of light in response to the slightest rattle of the dog cookie jar--be the same beast who stands in the backyard with snout in the wind, flipping you the hypothetical bird? Might this dog have an inkling how humiliating it is for you to prance around in your PJs shouting "Treat! Treat!" for the entertainment of the neighbors? Sorry, but no matter how ticked off it makes you, your dog lacks the ability to theorize what you are thinking and feeling. Instead he experiences how you respond to your thoughts and feelings, for better or for worse. Additionally, dogs lack human moral coding; they are not evaluating life nor considering their own performance from your empowered (you hope) human perspective. Dogs do things for dog reasons, as they should.

So, is that selective-hearing moment a by-product of improper education, indifference, defiance, or distraction? I would argue for improper education, indifference and distraction, but defiance is wishful thinking.  No offense, but your dog doesnt come with a built in will to serve. To defy you, first your dog would have to feel a duty to comply, and then challenge it. Dogs certainly will cooperate, provided they find compelling reasons to do so, but they are not selfless creatures just hoping for a chance to fetch your slippers. A dogs work ethic is cultivated. Methods may include the use positive reinforcement such as applied rewards, access to lifes rewards through your facilitation, and gains of social connection and security. Sadly, motivations may also include punishment; though there are better ways, some trainers still seek to illicit compliance from dogs who learn to avoid harm, threat, or rejection.

A dogs occasional "selective hearing" moments frequently stem from owner handling errors. Do you multi-cue like a broken record (sit-sit-sit-sit, etc.?) This could contribute to a reduced consistency in follow through from your dog, who has been taught--by you!--to tune you out. Do you bribe, rather than strategically (and correctly!) reinforcing compliance? This is another owner error that may undermine reliable responses from otherwise occupied pets. When there is nothing better to do they may work you over like a vending machine, but when presented with higher value, self-serve reinforcements of the positive variety--such as the offerings of the great outdoors--you may be left standing in bad pajamas with a cookie jar in your hand. Do you get angry at your dog? Your emotional ups and downs add stress and create mixed messages which may lead to hesitancy and avoidance from your dog. Are you a dog "dominator," extorting submission from your canine "friend?" This same dog may begin to reflect your overpowering ways back at you, asserting the power of ignoring and avoidance when out of your hands-on reach.

Properly trained dogs still occasionally test their handlers, despite solid, unwavering use of positive reinforcement; and even the best handlers make mistakes that inadvertently inspire their dogs to occasionally "test" them. Getting a dog to respond reliably and consistently requires a broad and creative understanding and application of positive reinforcement. It also requires awareness a dog learns systematically, through his own process, and part of the process is...selective hearing! From my viewpoint, a dog who examines his options--including ignoring me--is a smart dog. Luckily I am a smarter trainer, and in no time I will have that dog craning to hear what I might have to say, ready and willing to cooperate. Not sure how to achieve this with your own dog?? Take my class!

Sunday Pomp Circumstance Canine Manners Class Graduates today

What a great day it was today! My first Canine Good Manners class of 2009 graduated today here in Ventura. Such a lovely group. Dogs were showing off their skills by checking in and paying attention to their guardians during discussion time, as well as all the other manners skills, while practicing their loose leash walking, going in and out of the studio, and the ever popular "leave it!"... Brandy even learned to ignore the enticing paper napkin his "parents" tempted him with.

Riley is getting better at remaining quiet and sitting to greet. Ferris was meeting dogs and people without hesitation. Dickens stayed focus during the more difficult exercise of dogs walking around him in close proximity. And Kona, who is one of the youngest, really showed off her sit and down stay with increased duration and distance...

All of the guardians really figured out how to troubleshoot as they went along, and that was one of my main goals; this is what I find to be rewarding... Sure its great for dogs to perform all of the general behaviors in the studio here in Ventura, but it really means a lot to me when I see the human handlers getting what they want their dogs to do with the skills Ive taught them. And then being able to figure out what they need to do in case their dog doesnt "get it" the first time. Click-treat for the humans!

How To Generate A Canine Good Citizen

Puppy training is a vital part of as being a responsible dog owner. Working together with your dog brings better understanding between the both of you. This short article may help you along with your dog training. Your pet dog is eager to do things to please you and also you have to take time to show him how you can behave.

Small steps, gentle ways and patience are typical a part of obtaining your puppy used to their crate. Once your dog may have acclimated to the crate itself, close the gate and feeding him through it. Begin small, like 10 seconds at one time, and slowly move up the times. Freaking your dog is really a sign that you should decrease.

Schedule an appointment with your vet should your dog does not appear to be addressing your training. It does not necessarily mean these are dumb should your dog is not really learning properly. Sometimes physical and occasionally mental maladies could cause your puppy to never respond properly to training. Your vet could possibly provide you with some indication on the problem.

Food and treats can be your ally in training your pet to look for out his crate. Once in awhile when he returns to his crate give your dog to get strategically placed pieces of food and some treats every. He will make it a habit of checking the crate out more regularly in the event something different has miraculously appeared there.

While training your dog, observe his body language and general behavior closely. Try to find signs of enthusiasm. Is his tail wagging? Does he follow you around? This shows hes prepared to learn. Bored or nervous, stop what you really are doing and reevaluate, if you notice your pet dog is scared.

It is essential to realize that training your pet dog will need plenty of repetition and patience. It often takes a dog between 25 and 50 repetitions before they are able to learn a new command. Getting frustrated will only delay your results and could hurt your relationship with your pet.

When you are training your pet, make sure you are very patient. Different breeds of dogs learn at different rates. One dog can quickly learn while another dog will take a long time. Should you be impatient you will stress your dog and that he will likely be resistant to the best training efforts.

Make sure your dogs weight loss program is appropriate for him. You dont want to provide him the top protein food a dog who herds sheep would receive should your dog is a lazy dog who likes to lounge around all day long. This will create problems and vet bills down the line.

Some training techniques advise that you allow your dog a treat as being a reward forever performance. Be sure youre not giving your pet a reward every time they perform task, although this is a fantastic method. They are available can be expected the treat whenever and once you stop together with the treats, the obedience stops also, should you do. Instead offer the dog a treat randomly so they dont start to expect after they obtain a treat.

Start training your puppy early. Many individuals think that very young puppies are way too young to learn. The reality is that even puppies as young as about 6 weeks old are able to begin the basics of education, and starting early makes sure that a puppy may have a strong foundation for further advanced training later.

You need to associate a command with going outside in order to house train your pet and teach it to inquire about to look outside. Stand with your dog near to the door, say the command and carry it outside. Your puppy will go to the door once you repeat the command if it needs to go, when you continue doing this.

To stop any mess in your home, you may get a doggy toilet. Once your dog understands that it has to go away from house, utilize the same command you used to really make it realize that outside is a superb location to get in association with the doggy toilet.

Never punish your dog, or discipline him, right after the fact. If you find that he urinated on the carpet earlier from the day, punishing him now wont help. Dogs cannot reason and possess very short-term memories, so they will not likely associate the previous accident together with the punishment on hand.

When training your dog it is rather useful for the dogs owner to do some research into training. By learning how to train your dog the proper way one will make their job much simpler. It could be done the simplest way and become the easiest for the dog and owner to alter too.

Keep several of your dogs favorite treats together with you when you find yourself training him to obey a brand new command. Dogs thrive on positive reinforcement. Once you have his treat available, you can reward him the moment he successfully obeys this new command. Before long, he will be able to respond to this command efficiently.

When training a fresh puppy ahead, an extended rope is a good aid. Call the puppy while gently pulling it toward you together with praising it for coming. When it reaches you, praise it more and provide a popular treat. Soon the puppy will associate its name and coming over to you with praise and treats, then you wont need the rope anymore.

In order to alleviate separation anxiety inside your dog, provide him with lots of exercise. A tired dog is actually a happy dog. Slip out and then in of the house without creating a big problem from it. Sometimes saying goodbye in your pet increases his anxiety. If you see your pet has associated something like getting keys with leaving, then start doing the action a few times every day to quell negative feelings.

Training your dog may be vital, as already noted. Responsible pet owners make time to work together with their dogs and train them. Utilizing the information in the following paragraphs, can deal with training your dog and help you to become a better dog owner. Working together with your pet dog can develop a better relationship, which will make sure that he will truly be other people you know.

This Inquisitive Canine Now Soaring Proudly With NOOZHAWK!

Wow! Talk about exciting and completely positively rewarding! My rambling, opinionated, common sense,  and dare I say slightly smart-aleck mouth (and fingers) has proven to be an advantage once again! Yep, thats right! Im expanding outside the world of blogging and adding the very informative, local, online news Web site Noozhawk to my ventures - in a new column called "Ask the Trainer"...

Since a young girl my mother had encouraged me to speak up, take risks, take a chance (as long as I was safe - nothing crazy or illegal mind you), and "go for it". She would say "Whats the worst that could happen, someone might say no?" Well, I admit it sort of backfired in junior high when I asked a boy to a dance, but finally, after all these years, it worked for me! Someone said "yes"!

It all started when the very smart, business savvy, and open-minded Chris Donahue first made contact with me... Although he had called to inquire about something unrelated, I decided to take a chance and ask if he and the publisher/owner of Noozhawk Bill Macfayden, would be interested in a "dog behavior advice column"? Id always wanted to take the Q&A moments from my everyday dog trainer/coach life, and put it out there for the whole world to see.

Along with my moms voice in my head, there were Lorrie Thomass and Emilia Doerrs voices in my head too... theyve encouraged me to "own my expertise" and "sell it!" - talk about great Web Marketing Therapy!

So thanks to all of them, and my desire to share my advice and opinions with the world, I am now the proud writer of the Noozhawk pet column "Ask the Trainer"! The column will run on Fridays and repeat Saturdays. If you have any specific training and behavior questions about your dog, or a dog you know, or a dog youre thinking of getting, please feel free to write to me - your question just might end up on Noozhawk!

Wishing you all the self confidence you need to own your expertise, in whatever you do!
